Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson stated he barely escaped a life-threatening incident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when a pair of track officials crossed the track directly in front of him
The concerning event happened on the third rotation when track officials were seen on the circuit as Lawson was rejoining the race following an premature pit stop to swap his compromised front wing
Immediately after, the team's competitor Lawson spoke to his race engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you just see that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"
"I exited on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two guys dashing across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, honestly, it was so dangerous"
"Evidently there's been a failure in communication somehow but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We can't understand how on a live track marshals can be permitted to just dash across the track in such a way. I don't understand the reason, I'm sure we'll get some kind of clarification, but it really can't happen again"
F1's overseeing organization, the global motorsport federation, is currently investigating the circumstances
"After an occurrence at turn one, race control was informed that fragments were located on the track at the critical section of that bend" declared the FIA
"In the third rotation, marshals were informed and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and remove the wreckage once every vehicle had gone by"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had pitted, the orders to send marshals were canceled and a safety warning flag was shown in that zone"
"We are still investigating what transpired after that point"
